I have the wonderful opportunity to practice patience and flexibility in both of my professional careers: as a pediatric occupational therapist and a family photographer. To help families prepare for our time together, I created a simple and effective resource: a social story.
What is a social story? It's a tool often used to help children, especially those on the autism spectrum, understand social situations and expectations. By presenting information in a clear, simple, and visual way, a social story can reduce anxiety and help a child feel prepared for a new experience. And what I've learned as an OT is that what’s good for kids with specific challenges is often great for all kids.
This social story is designed to start a positive conversation about your upcoming photo session. It’s perfect for preparing your kids for your family's photo session whether it's an outdoors family session or if I'm coming to your home for a lifestyle session!
- A friendly introduction to me (with my picture!) so your child knows who they will meet.
- A picture of a camera: A great opportunity to explain what it is and what it does, since many kids today only see phones as cameras.
- Acknowledgement of the transitions, like getting into special clothes and driving to our location.
- A clear and simple message: The whole point of this is for your family to have fun together!
This resource is intentionally basic and flexible. You know your child best. You can print it out and read it together, show them the pictures on a screen and talk about them, or even save the images to their tablet's camera roll. The idea is to introduce the concept in whatever way works best for your family.
