After photographing families for nearly 10 years all over the DFW area, I’ve learned that sometimes going just a little further away can completely transform your photos and your experience. Sure, driving an hour with kids might sound like a challenge, but I promise… it’s worth it.

A Unique Setting Can Change Everything

Our sessions out at The Little Sunflower Farm (link to the farm here!) are the perfect example! You don’t see sprawling sunflower fields every day in Dallas or Mesquite, and that’s exactly why they make such incredible backdrops. The colors and textures do half the work for us — your family is surrounded by unique beauty, and it shows in every frame. These aren’t just photos for Instagram; they’re meant to be art pieces you’ll proudly hang on your walls.

The Car Ride is Your Secret Weapon

I know what you might be thinking: “Two hours in the car with kids?!” But here’s the thing — car rides sometimes actually make photo sessions easier.

A lot of kids nap during the ride. They arrive rested. You give them a quick snack before we start, and suddenly we’ve hit the magic formula: rested + fed = happy.

Even if they don’t nap, the change of scenery and anticipation of “something new” often puts them in a great mood. Add in a playlist of their favorite songs, and the ride becomes part of the fun.

When your kids step into a new environment, they’re getting rich sensory input that sparks curiosity, engagement, and joy. Let me explain...

Visual stimulation: Imagine standing in a sea of golden yellow and green, where sunflower heads tower above you. The sheer height of the flowers create a feeling of wonder, and every direction offers a different view. From seeing the sunflowers fill the horizon to inspecting the petals and stems up close… all of these create a feast for the eyes that’s completely different from their daily surroundings. 

Auditory experiences: The gentle rustle of leaves, the hum of bees, birds in the sky — grounding sounds that help kids feel connected to the moment.

Tactile exploration: Running their hands along a sunflower stalk, feeling the textures of leaves, even squishing their toes into the grass or soil — these textures give their brain new information to process, which is a key part of sensory development.

Movement opportunities: Running through rows, twirling in open fields, crouching to inspect a bug, climbing on the swing — all of this builds motor planning, coordination, and body awareness.

From a developmental perspective, these experiences strengthen memory and emotional connection. When your child looks at a framed photo from the session, they won’t just see themselves smiling in a pretty place... they’ll remember the special day.
